Sundapple Nook: A Woodland Retreat
Sundapple Nook transforms a forgotten corner beneath an old apple tree into a peaceful woodland retreat. Inspired by the client’s desire for a tranquil, magical space that blends seamlessly with their garden, this design balances wildlife-friendly planting, low-maintenance solutions, and a sense of discovery. The name ‘Sundapple’ evokes the dappled sunlight filtering through the apple tree’s canopy, symbolising harmony, warmth, and connection to nature.
Design Process
1. Client Brief
The client sought to revitalise a shady, unused corner into a woodland-inspired escape. Key requests included:
A natural, low-maintenance aesthetic.
Features like a stone bench, stepping stones, and a birdbath.
Screening for nearby compost bins using plants that match the woodland theme.
2. Site Survey
A west- and north-facing corner with dappled afternoon sunlight and neutral to alkaline loamy soil, shaded by a mature apple tree. The compost bins were positioned near the corner, requiring visual integration into the design.
3. History & Story
This space draws inspiration from the mystical allure of woodland folklore and the apple tree’s symbolic richness. In Norse mythology, Idunn’s apples represented eternal youth, while Greek lore tells of the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, symbolising beauty and reward. The garden’s name, Sundapple, reflects both the apple tree’s presence and the ever-changing dance of light beneath its canopy—a reminder of nature’s enduring magic.
4. Research
Key research areas included:
Wildlife-friendly and low-maintenance planting for shaded woodland gardens.
Seasonal layering to provide interest year-round.
The sensory effects and folklore of herbs like Sweet Woodruff, Lemon Balm, and Creeping Thyme.
5. Concepts & Ideas
Curved Borders & Pathways: A curved layout creates flow, blending the nook with the rest of the garden. Stepping stones lead to a stone bench, surrounded by lush greenery.
Wildlife Habitats: Features like log piles and wildflower pockets attract pollinators and small animals.
Mystical Features: A hidden sculpture and birdbath invite exploration and reflection.
6. Final Design & Plant List
The design features layered planting for structure, texture, and seasonal interest:
Ground Covers: Sweet Woodruff, Wild Strawberries, Cyclamen, and Creeping Thyme carpet the base, spilling over small boulders to soften edges and add visual depth.
Mid-Layer Plants: Ferns, Hellebores, and Heucheras form a textured tapestry, weaving between taller plants and ground covers.
Taller Plants: Hydrangea Paniculata, Foxgloves, and Japanese Anemones create height and frame the space, with shrubs adding year-round structure.
The plants are arranged in layers, mimicking natural woodland stratification, with boulders elevating certain specimens for added interest and flow. Dense planting ensures low maintenance while enhancing the woodland feel.
Herbs: A Sensory & Mystical Experience
To enhance the bench area, three key herbs were selected for their aromatic qualities and rich symbolism:
Sweet Woodruff: With its sweet, hay-like scent and hints of vanilla, this herb evokes calm and serenity. Historically used in medieval rituals, it symbolises renewal and enchantment, enhancing the garden’s timeless, magical atmosphere.
Lemon Balm: Offering a fresh, citrusy aroma, this “elixir of life” is known for uplifting and revitalising properties. It creates a cheerful, energising balance to the space.
Creeping Thyme: With its warm, earthy scent, thyme grounds the sensory experience and connects visitors to the natural world. Associated with courage and protection in folklore, it complements the ethereal qualities of the other herbs.
Together, these herbs create a layered sensory experience:
Sweetness for serenity (Sweet Woodruff).
Brightness for energy (Lemon Balm).
Earthiness for grounding (Creeping Thyme).
This combination invites visitors to pause and breathe deeply, connecting with the mystical ambiance of Sundapple Nook.
Challenges & Growth
This project deepened my understanding of woodland ecosystems and wildlife-friendly planting. Researching the sensory and symbolic effects of herbs like Sweet Woodruff enriched my design process, allowing me to connect plants with emotional and sensory impact. The practical challenge of layering plants around boulders taught me to create depth and balance in compact spaces, using elevation and contrasting textures to mimic nature.
Reflections
Sundapple Nook embodies the three principles of my design philosophy:
Harmonious & Ecological Connection: A haven for wildlife and pollinators, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.
Timeless, Purposeful Beauty: Flowing layouts, layered textures, and a palette of cool pastels create lasting charm.
Inspired by Wonder & Story: Mystical touches, symbolic planting, and folklore elements transform the space into a story-filled sanctuary.
This project celebrates the magic of nature, offering a peaceful retreat to connect with the dappled light and the timeless wisdom of the apple tree.
